Picked up at the Little Free Library on Oleson
It has been awhile since I have read a classic mystery. Roderick Alleyn a Scotland Yard inspector is on holiday in New Zealand. He tags along with a theater group that has come on the same ship as they perform at a fictitious town, Middleton. Alleyn and the whole troupe witness a murder. Alleyn volunteers to help the local police.
This seemed rather flat. The characters including the main character, Roderick Alleyn, had no depth. Much of the story is told in dialog that is full of what I take to be British and Kiwi 1930’s slang and British stage terms.
Since the author, Ngaio Marsh, was a New Zealander of the period, I suspect the apparent racism was part of the background of the era.
The solution to the mystery was only mildly interesting and relied on an inaccurate diagram of the theater included in the book.
