Good stuff - reminds me of Gene Wolfe, in a lot of ways, but classic Iain Banks. There are three story strands, one of which features a naive youngster whose semi-literate writing style is of the txt msg generation, but also recalls the Scots barbarian of The Bridge.
A few sly jokes here and there - including a line stolen from Monty Python and the Holy Grail - and a future world which is gradually revealed as the stories unfold.
Liked the Lammergeirs, too.
