I have never heard of this book, or the author's first book, which was apparently wildly successful. However, I often really like historical fiction, and I know the locales, so I am intrigued.

Wow, what a wonderful book this is. Gives you a wonderful sense of its setting (Scranton and Philadelphia) and its time (early 1930's), with a story you care about and characters who are real and complex.
It's occasionally shocking to read about the limitations on women's lives at that time, but it reads as absolutely true, especially in precarious industrial cities at a time of assimilation, uncertainty and change. A wonderful way to put yourself into the shoes of teenagers in the 20's and 30's.
A page turner: I recommend it.
