Sam the butcher is missing, and maverick investigator Dominic Queste is on the case. But it’s not because he misses Sam’s prize-winning steak pies… A dangerous man has arrived in Glasgow. He’s no small-town crook, and he’s leaving a trail of disturbing clues across the city, starting with the missing cousin of Queste’s new lover. Amidst a twisted game of cat and mouse, suspicious coppers and a seemingly random burglary at the judge’s house, Queste has to keep his wits about him. Or he might just find himself on the butcher’s block.

If you like your crime gritty & dark but with a wicked hint of humour then you can't really go wrong with this!

The storyline is a good one but what makes the book is the wise-cracking Dominic Queste. He's a brilliant character, a touch of the hard-boiled PI's of Chandler's & with a sharp turn in witty repartee (I often found it reminiscent Stuart Pawson's albeit gentler Charlie Priest - although that might be down to the film references!) There are some great one liners in the dialogue & many almost throwaway comments, just slotted in here & there but guaranteed to make your lips twitch into a smile.

"I'd barely settled into the comfy armchair in her living room before typical Glasgow hospitality came to the fore and she asked me if I wanted a nice cup of tea. Of course I did, no-one ever wants a horrible cup of tea.

Gritty, gruesome & funny - what's not to love?
