Thank you for this book! I read City & the City earlier this year and totally loved it so am looking forward to getting into this.
Very different from City and the City, but equally set in a complex and carefully thought-out world. Mieville's imagination is incredible. His concepts, from the snake-moth's wings, to khepri art, and to the Construct Council's machines, all were original and captivating. My absolute favourite character was the Weaver whose chaotic behaviour (and free verse) throughout the novel was both fun and thought-provoking.
Some of the novel's violence reminded me of Iain M. Banks. However, whereas my criticism of the latter is that much of his violence feels unnecessary, the violence in Perdido Street Station did always serve a purpose within the plot. It was uncomfortable at times, but in no way gratuitous.
I suspect that on the whole there were a lot of aspects and themes within this novel that I missed. It's a grand and powerful undertaking by Meiville. But what I did follow and understand I liked.
