Mailed to the Netherlands on May 27th. Happy travels!
Found this book in my mailbox today. Thanks lauraloo, for sharing this book! I hope it will be just as good as I remember. This book is a bit of childhood sentiment for me, though I read it in Dutch a long time ago.
I still love this book. Of course there were things I didn't remember - but over all it's just a lovely story. I never noticed the incredible moralistic last chapter when I first read it though... and I can't quite remember how the Yorkshire accent was translated into Dutch either. Maybe I will reread it in Dutch too then!
On its way to Austria it is - going to citrus as soon as I get her address.

My apologies to all for stalling this bookring....the book actually arrived in Australia over a month ago, but I'm afraid that life's demands and some health problems overwhelmed me and the poor books sitting on the window table have been a casualty! I'm sorry folks...but I have bounced back and I'm making a big effort to get up to date.
I loved this book and it was well worth the wait. I'm not sure that I ever read it when younger - if I did I'd forgotten many of the details - what I do remember very well is the film that was made of it. I think it was a British film, does anyone know? Anyway, it had a big impact on me as a young child.
The book is delightful, pastoral, redemptive, with very well drawn and believable characters. Each of the characters becomes the best person they can be - and for readers that's very satisfying and leaves a good feeling.
Yes, the last chapter is very moralistic and shows how dated the book really is (1911). The whole hope for scientific discovery gives it away a bit too...but the themes are timeless and enchanting and hopeful. Just what I needed to finish the year!
