Summary
Nine year old Heather and Dorelle are best friends. They're in the middle of growing up when people start saying "you wont be able to do that when you get older." So as her friend Dorelle is ready to grow up, Heather decides to fight it all the way. Her older sister Samantha is no help. Then her aunt, Rosa Rita, steps in to tell her some secrets about growing up.

Critique
This is a good book that addresses one of the most important stages of life, growing up. I remember being eager to grow up, but I'm sure that there are some kids who don't look forward to it as much. Now, as I look back, I wish I had fought it more! This story will speak to today's kids because so many demands on them have made life very frustrating. Refusing to grow up may be one way to fight the responsibility pressure and stress that getting older promise. It's been a while since I have read this book, so my critique needs to be refreshed.

Activities
Career PlanningJournal prompts are abundant for this topic. Perhaps having children respond to these questions as the story is read may allow them to synthesize Heather's feelings better.

Growth ChartMark the kids names at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year. Mark important events on the chart to create a time line as the year unfolds. Record major emotional, maturity, or responsibility breakthroughs. Focus on the growing up bit. NOTE: The growth chart has not been tried yet! Kids don't grow over night! It may not work!
