I‘ve heard great things about this seemingly unmoochable series, so I have ordered this used from amazon.fr, delivered to St Loup. First in the series.

I have heard about this series for ages and have kept it on the back burner for a while, first unable to get a copy (mooched or at a reasonable price), and then once I had it, I saved it as a special treat.
This week I finally pulled it off the shelf and am happy to report that it did not disappoint, but deserved its special treat status.
Initially I wondered if Charlotte would turn out to be the sister of, or assistant to the well-known detective, perhaps pulling the strings from above (or from an adjacent room?), but it was a delightful to realize that here she is the real McCoy - complete with her very own Watson.
At an early age I was totally turned off by Conan Doyle's stories (The Speckled Band was the culprit..), but I have enjoyed some of the films and really loved Sherlock's deductions here - so I may have to have another go at the originals.
As is the case with her other books, Thomas' writing is crisp and clear, and her characters are delightfully complex.
I look forward to pulling out the next two in the series that I already have on my shelves... when I am in need of a special treat. I also hope to be able to collect more in the near future!

The previous entry was my initial reaction to this book and it holds true.
I am currently reading the second and was irritated that I didn't remember all the details even though I didn't read this very long ago. I figured I would pick this up and just read a few pages to refresh my memory. A few hours later, I have now re-read the whole book, just for the pleasure of it. I can return to the second with a clearer sense of how it all began. I have the fourth in the series on hold from the library, so figured I had best read two and three promptly.
