Stephen, a teenager from an affluent family in Hong Kong, is sent to recuperate from an illness in his family's summer home in a small seaside village in Japan.

The house is tended to by Matsu. Slowly, the quiet Matsu opens up to Stephen, and lets him in on his personal life and secrets.

Tsukiyama is great at writing in a beautiful prose and this is a lovely story, and she is especially good at capturing the beauty and tranquility of a Japanese garden or a Japanese woman.

However, I find it a bit unreal that with the two countries at war, Stephen, as a Chinese, lives such a peaceful existence in Tarumi. Yes, it is a remote village, but I still find it rather unusual. And with Canton fallen to the Japanese, what parents will in their right mind send their child back home to Hong Kong? I know at that time people thought that Hong Kong, belonging to the British, will be more protected, but still...

Anyway, this book is on Arvores's wishlist, so I am sending it to him. Please enjoy!

"He believed life should be simple and uniform, filled with a sense of order and honor"

That's what I believed for a long time. And then I have learned acceptance.
I also had to deal with war when I was a child and leave someone I truly loved behind, to never see them again. Two years ago I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and have been struggling ever since. So,
this book has brought lots of emotions to surface, as I could relate with lots of the hardship with which the main characters had to deal with.
I loved the relationship between Matsu and Stephen, which reminded me of my childhood days in Africa.
The writing is very smooth and fluid and I felt this book was very poetic in the way the characters relate to each other.

This JE may be very personal and confusing, but that's what I can say about the book at this point.
It will be sent to mcsar tomorrow for the wish list tag game. I'm really sorry for the delay.
