Summary: This beautifully crafted novel won the National Book Award in 1992. John Grady Cole, who at sixteen finds himself at the end of a long line of Texas ranchers, cut off from the only life he has ever imagined for himself. He sets off for Mexico on a sometimes idyllic, sometimes comic journey to a place where dreams are paid for in blood. He crosses the Rio Grande into Mexico in 1949, accompanied by his pal Lacey Rawlins. The two precocious horsemen pick up a sidekick--a laughable but deadly marksman named Jimmy Blevins--encounter various adventures on their way south and finally arrive at a paradisiacal hacienda where Cole falls into an ill-fated romance.

This book started out slow, but got better as it moved along. The author uses "he" a lot and it was sometimes confusing on who "he" was. A few parts were very vague and I found myself having to go back and re-read to find out what happened to a character. Because of the very frequent use of the word "he" I rated this book only a six. The three main characters were all male...so there was a lot of "he said", "he did" etc and this reader often did not know which "he" the author was referring to.
