This was an enjoyable book for me but it fell flat. It just felt like the author made this family too dysfunctional for me. The matriarch, Astrid, witnesses a tragic accident, which makes her question her choices in life. All of her children and grandchildren have issues and that's why I felt like the author just handed out each family member some kind of struggle and then wrapped up the story line with a nice little bow.
I read this for PopSugar's 2020 Summer Reading Challenge prompt: A book with an LGBTQ+ protagonist.

I'm sending this to dvg to fill a wish for the 2021 USA & Canada Wishlist Tag Game . Happy reading!
Thank you so much for filling my wish! I have enjoyed other titles by this author and can't wait to dive into this one. I spotted it on a wishlist recently too; so I will have it traveling soon. 🙂 doing the happy dance to Mt. TBR.
To put it simply, this is a story about life in the Strick family. Astrid Strick, the patriarch, witnesses a woman being hit by a school bus. This event starts off the story of Astrid. Then we have her eldest son, Elliott, who is struggling with proving himself to his family – mostly his mother. Then there is Porter, the daughter, who runs a farm that produces goat cheese. She is struggling with her life choices of becoming pregnant via sperm bank – worried how Astrid will react to the news. She also is having an on/off affair with her former high school boyfriend who happens to be married. Then there is Nicky, the youngest son, famous for a movie role, married with a teenage daughter. After an incident, he sends his daughter, Cecelia, to live with Astrid for a bit. Cecelia makes a new friend, August, which is a good storyline.
The Strick family worry about the usual things in life: work and money, family, friends. But all the family members seem to have issue with Astrid. As the family members move through the events in their life, we will discover whether the family finally comes together.
I love reading Emma Straub who can tackle subjects with insight and wisdom.
