Finally got around to this one & wow! I haven’t read Lord of the Flies (I know, I know) but I understand the concept and the two books probably are along the same lines as far as subject matter. FantasticLand is an amusement park that gets hit by a hurricane and cut off from society. Told in interviews, stories and perspectives come out about the awful tragedy. I would definitely recommend it.

What in the world?? This is a crazy and gruesome story that will draw you in from page one! If I had read this prior to 2020, I would have said no way could a hurricane wreak this much havoc on an amusement park in Central Florida that gets cut off from society, but as you know anything is possible in 2020. Tribes form and fighting ensues and the survivors tell their story in interview form. A very haunting book.

Thanks for sending along the book, it was a nice surprise to find it in the mail box this morning. Back on lock down for three weeks (at least) so any diversion is a welcome one.

For some reason I couldn't get into this book. To be honest, I don't think I made it very far, so maybe it is great once you get to a certain point. Anyway, time to send it on to someone who wants it.

The wishlist-tag book arrived safely today - many thanks!

Later: While I knew going in that this would be gruesome, I didn't expect it to be *that* gruesome. And while I generally like the found-document/epistolary form of story-telling, I'd hoped this one would be more like World War Z, with the accounts showing a mix of heroism and panic while sketching the origins of the disaster. Oh, there were aspects of that - and a few of the accounts did suggest some attempts at leadership and caring - but most of the people who tried to do the right thing had pretty awful outcomes, either to themselves or to others, and overall it was horrifying and depressing. And as tempting as it would be to blame most of it on the charismatic psychopath who instigated the worst deeds, I'm not sure the book provided enough insight as to why so many people followed him.

I did find the setting rather entrancing, in a grisly way; amusement parks are meant to be fun and light-hearted, so any time they aren't - when shut down at night, or devastated by a hurricane, or long-abandoned - they seem to be exceptionally creepy.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the book with some entertaining tidbits.]
