I was given this book at tonight's Meetup by a fellow Bookcrossing member who didn't register it. Thanks, P!

This book was made into a movie that was a critical and popular hit at the time of its release. But that was some time ago so I'll give a small synopsis of its contents.

Tita is the youngest child born into a family led by a tyrannical matriarch. Thanks to a bizarre and long-held family tradition, she is informed that she will never be allowed to marry since the youngest daughter is fated to take care of her domineering mother until the mother dies.

Thus, Pedro, the boy Tita loves, decides to marry her sister Rosaura in order to remain near Tita. The book details Tita and Pedro's doomed romance as they pursue each other and their elusive happiness throughout the years as first the wicked mother Elena and then Rosaura dies.

Along the way, Tita cooks her wonderful recipes as a way of venting her feelings. Because of some magical alchemy, her emotions find their way into her recipes, making the consumers happy, grief-stricken or flushed with desire.

The book is a marvelous combination of fairy tale and starcrosed romance. Each chapter also begins with a recipe from Tita's cookbook although they might be hard for Westerners to prepare since the measurements are given in kilos and grams instead of pounds and ounces. But that's a minor quibble.

The copy I have is a softcover version with a different cover than is shown here.

Released on Wednesday, May 05, 2004 at Angel Street Thrift Shop, 118 West 17th St. in New York, New York USA.

This store is located on the southwest side of the street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. The interior is small so the book(s) shouldn't be too hard to locate.
