One of the books that I couldn't resist buying when I attended a baby shower at an independent bookstore.

Like all books for younger readers that I register, this is done in memory of Becky, the daughter of a dear friend and fellow bookcrosser, ResQgeek, who was tragically killed in August 2010.

Becky's love lives in you! Live her love by sharing Becky's hugs! Visit the Becky's Hugs page at Facebook. http://www.BeckysHugs.com

If you watch Trevor Noah on The Daily Show, you know that he is insightful and intelligent and honest to a fault. This book tells you how he got that way. A large factor is his mother, who raised him with a deliberate dedication to the end result of a good man who is his own man in spite of the world and his own shortcomings. Another factor is the hyper racial focus of South Africa and apartheid and its aftermath. His parents were from opposite ends of the color line and by appearance he would be categorized in a third racial group in a society with an incredibly regimented system for every facet of life. He was a man of many worlds who belonged nowhere, becoming a chameleon and an amateur psychologist to survive. That is the driving force of most of his humor, the understanding that people are people regardless of how the world sees them.

One of the most impressive things about this book is that for all of the openness in discussing his life, Trevor still manages to protect his own privacy and that of his family. There are many questions that I came away with -- did he ever learn to speak any Pedi? What became of Teddy? At what point did he tell his mother the truth about the situation with Teddy? What happened to the cheese boys? Are things at all better now in Johannesburg or South Africa on any of the issues that are covered?

Definitely an enjoyable read and one that I will be thinking about for a long time to come.

This was not the book I was expecting. I did anticipate learning about Noah's childhood in barely-post-apartheid South Africa but I think part of me was waiting to learn about how he became a famous comedian and host of the Daily Show. This is not about that part of his life. It's mostly about his mom, to be honest, a black woman who intentionally had a child with a white man, which was illegal at the time. And Noah's navigation of racial lines, since as a mixed boy he could fit in equally well/poorly in the black, white, and colored communities of South Africa. It's a very interesting story, humorous at times, touching or sad at others, but it's not full of jokes. In other words, I recommend this book but don't expect it to be anything like the Daily Show.
