A novel about a German-American family and their friends& acquaintances that spans multiple generations and begins just after the end of the first World War. Sensitively drawn characters that are hilariously bizarre and also incredibly moving. It made me cry, laugh, and hold my breath in wonder and terror, often within the same sentence. Rich and layered prose that demands a luxurious re-read (or several!).
