The Hostage Bride is the first in a series of three books, about three girls who swear they will never get married. Portia is the bastard daughter of the brother of the marquis and wants to be a soldier; Phoebe is awkward, clumsy and a poet; and Olivia is shy, stammers and dreams of being a scholar.
This first book is about Portia. She gets involved in a war, from both sides, has an affair with the outlaw Rufus Decatur(who is on the king's side), and does indeed, become a soldier.
