Inspirational read - brought back many memories of all that cold, pain hunger and crap food one eats on multiday trails. As well as the connections...

This is a fantastic book. Kelly has a wonderful relationship with her father, who teaches her to love the outdoors and adventure. After he dies she is lost, ending up in a bad relationship and needing to find herself again, and taking the name Amazin' Grace she sets out to walk the Appalachian Trail. The true story of Grace's 2000 mile journey, the people she meets, the difficulties, hardship and danger and the moments of extreme good luck, which they suspect are brought by the Trail Goddess Gladys, all make a really great read and I can't wait to get out hiking again!

I apologize for taking so long to finish this book. Work had been extremely busy in the past couple of months, so I didn't have a lot of reading time available. However, once I started this book, I found myself quite absorbed in the author's story. I appreciated her positive outlook, her honesty, the depictions of the interesting personalities she met on the trail, and most of all the detailed descriptions of everything, big and small, that she encountered while hiking.
Thank you, Poodlesister, for contributing this book to the roundabout. I will send it off shortly to mcsar, the next reader.

Kelly Winter is a good writer so I was hooked to her story from the beginning but not so on her personal trail story.
I still don't buy how you could suffer so much and still continue on this difficult and dangerous trail. On the pictures she's wearing glasses and nowhere in the book she is mentioning any problem with that. How is it possible ?
And what about her knees after the trail ? You w'd need surgery for the
worn cartilage.
She isn't a sympathetic person for me.
Thank you anyway for sharing.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
This was a fascinating read. I am used to woods, picking berries or mushrooms or just walking on (or without) footpaths, but I have never really hiked on trails for any length of time. Therefore, it was very interesting to read about ins and outs of trekking on such a challenging trail and for such a long distance. I enjoyed Kelly Winters' writing, her introspection and personal searching, and her portraits of fellow hikers, but like Icila, I found it difficult to understand why anybody would want to drive themselves to such a life threatening state (hunger, hypothermia) repeatedly.
The book is now travelling on to its next reader. Have fun.

Fascinating story. I've read "A walk in the woods" by Bill Bryson who also walked the AT, but this book had a completely different feel. In many ways, I can't relate to the author. I would not feel comfortable in such an unstable life. But at the same time, I admire her precisely because she can lead such an unstable und unreliant life. Very nice contribution to this roundabout!

I'm always in awe of people who manage to get through such gruelling journey, and the story of the trail fascinating.
Kelly and I didn't get off to a great start though. I felt she went into too much detail re the problems with her partner. It's not really any of our business. And after telling us all about his dishonesty, she goes off and gets a job on the basis of a made-up CV, and goes for walks when she should be working.
But having said that, I still enjoyed the book - the entire trail sounds stunning. And given our lack of travel options at the moment, it was nice to do some armchair travelling with her. Thanks for sharing!

I started reading this, then had to move on to something else, and found myself a bit reluctant to go back to it. I'm not sure why - I love tales about the outdoors and nature, and love hiking myself. The writing itself was ok as well. But I think I just ended up a little bit annoyed with the author's attitude - the last thing I remember reading was her going on about not being cut out for a boring office job. Well, some of us don't get the chance to drop everything to 'find ourselves' in the wilderness and have to hold down a 'boring' job in order to actually get on and live. Which maybe why I couldn't be bothered to go back and find out whether she found what she was looking for in the end.

I absolutely loved this book, and I speak as a non lover of non-fiction. It had the same heartening style as Raynor Wynn’s The Salt Path and without the flippancy of Bill Bryson and his also enjoyable A Walk in the Woods. I actually read it in 2 days, so I have now got to get on with some chores! Thank you muchly, Poodlesister, for this offering.

Arrived today. I've got to admit I groaned when I saw it. I've read Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert - Wild by Cheryl Strayed - Birdbrain by Johanna Sinisalo and other similar stories about 'journeys'. I personally feel they are written by/about people who are very annoying or selfish but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

OK, I’ve been proved wrong. Kelly Winters is different from the other authors I’ve read with similar stories. She was used to camping, she had good outdoor knowledge, she could read the weather and she could identify edible wild plants. I do like walking but would hate to have to put wet clothes back on. I need a hotel at the end of the day with a warm bath/shower and someone else doing the cooking. Like some other bookcrossers I don’t understand how she could continue after so many life threatening incidents and with the huge amount of pain she must have been in with her knees.
