Picked up tonight at BXer gathering. I just finished a romance by this author, and I've heard that her mysteries are better, so I thought I'd give it a chance. Thanks!

This is the fourth book I've read by Catherine Coulter, but the first three were romance and those I'd probably give the same rating to. I don't know what it is about her writing style that just doesn't thrill me, both her romances and her mystery. The story line was great, very fast-paced, interesting and enjoyable, although I have to brag on this one that I had it figured all out fairly early on, but her dialogue seems so forced. Her conversations between characters weren't written as "What would a person say in this instance" but rather as "What does this person need to say to further the story along" and that makes for very uncomfortable and awkward reading because you just don't believe what's happening. The only other minor detail was that it was very obvious that she had some romance background, and that was a little out of place in a mystery/thriller. Not that the two can't mix, but the writing styles and character development are very different and combining the two was a little strange. But, in spite of my complaints, I did enjoy the book. I think that the plot was a winner, it was just the execution needed a little work.
