"When Candida Wilton arrives in London, recently betrayed, divorced and rejected..." The story of a woman in her sixties starting over after a marriage breakup, her new life includes a move to London. I am in my sixties, and just returned from a trip to London...I've been through a marriage breakup and, well....this book caught my eye. Originally, this book was for sale at the Curiosity Book Shop in Creemore, Ontario (a charming little town that was having an arts festtival this weekend) for $21.00 Cdn., but it had migrated to a neighbouring 2nd hand books/antiques shop, where I bought it for $3.00. A Bon marché ! I enjoyed "A Summer Birdcage" and "The Radiant Way" but it's been years since I picked up a Drabble book. More from the cover: "....lively, beautifully rendered, rich in literary allusions and psychological insight, The Seven Sisters is a splendid, broadly appealing novel about starting over."

I enjoyed this book, although it confounded me at times. If you like Anita Brookner, (I love her books), you will probably like Drabble. The main character, Candida Wilton writes in diary style, and while I found her a dry, brittle and not a whole lot of fun person, the book was still a page-turner - even laugh-out-loud at times. About half way through the novel, something monumental happens to change Candida's life completely (a windfall - no spoiler here - it's on the cover) and the book suddenly takes off in another direction. The ending (or near-end) really left me scratching my head, so if you can decipher what happened, please let me know! This book is travelling overseas to Rahar109. I hope you will enjoy it. If not, pass it on!

I enjoyed this book very much, although I did want to give Candida a good shake from time to time. The towards-the-end part puzzled me - I didn't quite get it. Maybe someone cleverer than me can explain!
