Not what I was expecting at all!

Moyes is not an author I would have picked up myself, but thanks to Bookcrossing, she has become one of my many 'must-reads'.

I had never heard of this part of WWII history and was fascinated by the idea of hundreds of women travelling together across the sea to be with their husbands. I'm not sure it is something to be proud of or something that is slightly shameful - the 'Not Wanted - Don't Come' telegrams are just awful and you wonder if that would be allowed these days. For the men to just change their minds is horrible.

Margaret is probably my favourite character and I liked her story the most, even though it is Frances who probably has the most interesting and the biggest change to her life. The whole back story of her marriage was sad and yet amazing at the same time. The only thing about Margaret I didn't enjoy was the whole Maude plotline - I just don't know why authors do it (spoiler alert!). Why put an animal into a story just so it can create some emotional bits when it dies? And that's why I have docked it one star!

But on the whole I really enjoyed reading this and can't wait to try other books by this author - hopefully they will be just as surprising as this one.

REVIEW:-"I really enjoyed this book which seemed well-researched and was based on factual events. I felt sorry for Frances and some of the other brides who had a rough time, in more ways than one, sailing across the sea from Australia to England. Having personally been aboard two modern aircraft carriers it was interesting for me to read of the routine and set-up back in the 1940's. There were one or two points that I was unsure of e.g. how so many people would have managed without an efficient medical staff and also the intricacies of disembarking and re-embarking with regard to lifeboats. However the main love story was compelling and had a satisfactory ending for me. I have already read several other titles by this author and am keen to read more."

I already have books travelling in many countries around the world-a list can be found on my bookcrossing profile.

When re-releasing this book please be aware that airports are not a good place to leave books unless they have a specific book exchange shelf or area, due to security problems, so they may well just be disposed of. Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.

This book has been living with my daughter in the Cayman Islands where I left it after my previous visit when I didn’t get around to reading it. So I picked it up again when I arrived recently.
I have read and enjoyed several of Jo Jo Moyes books including the ‘Me Before You’ trilogy and ‘The ‘Giver of Stars’. I enjoyed ‘The Ship of Brides’ very much. She is such a good story teller sometimes focusing on episodes in history that are not widely known about such as the pack-horse libraries in ‘The Giver of Stars’
