" Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live happily in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo - until the unthinkable happens and they are forced to flee. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain.

As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all - and perhaps this is the hardest thing they face - they must journey to find each other again. "

This was a mostly predictable, poignant story, rooted strongly to reality and a very sad and bittersweet book. A couple of twists were very obvious and unfortunately the general picture is nothing new. But when someone puts a face to a war and/or extreme violence and poverty's victim, a refugee, a person tagled in a political situation, people are and will always feel more moved by an individual drama than by the generic History and collective tragedy.

I felt that the author took a mild and soft way of narrating situations, focusing mostly on the internal life of the main character while using a narration technique with taggled time lines and this sometimes worked better than others, making the characters a bit detached and flat.

All that said, this was in general a very touching and interesting story offering food for thought. Maybe its existence alone is a way to manipulate the readers to think and feel, but rightly so!

I really liked this book, it gives us to see a different version, at the same time intimate and raw, of what the Syrians have been going through since their lives fell into chaos and war. I found the back and forth between the past and the present interesting, even if at first it seemed to ease the tension of the plot, it finally allows us to concentrate on the details, the encounters, the story. It allowed me to discover that Syria borders the Mediterranean Sea and that there were bees in Aleppo.

Thanks a lot for this discovery Delphi-Reader !

Thank you for this Wishlist tag Edwardstreet, and what a well travelled (unlike us at the moment) and highly rated book! I shall have to try and send to a new country when I finish - from Greece to France to New Zealand and now in Australia.

A sad story of love, war, death and displacement. The story was told through the eyes of Nuri, a beekeeper from Aleppo in Syria and his journey as a refugee from his homeland to the UK.
Weaving backwards and forwards through their journey, we learned about how the death of his only son affected both he and his wife in such different and heartbreaking ways. We learned about the difficulties and dangers refugees faced and the hopelessness they felt.
A sad story but with a positive ending, thought provoking for us who have always lived in safety.
