~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" At nine years old, Frankie Presto is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings.But Frankie's talent is unique, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the twentieth century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King and even Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realises, through his music, he can actually affect people's futures -- with one string turning blue whenever a life is altered.At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later does he reappear, to change one last life . . . "
This is the first time I read anything by this popular author and I found this book below my expectations. This might have to do with timing, because life is a bit hectic here right now, I don't know.
At first I couldn't get into this book at all. Later it kind of grew on me and I liked parts of the story. I found some developments and themes interesting and some scenes well-written and moving.
The main character is what seems a common preface for authors to blend real life persons and events with fictional characters and plots. He is a person who has been everywhere and meet everyone and seen everything. He also had a dramatic childhood and an adventurous life.
But on many crucial points of the story, the author uses this background or other slim excuses to justify this character's silly life choices or weird behavior, while his childhood and life-long love behaves like an eejit too. The romance part nearly made me puke, I hate all those sugary eye-rolling elements in books.
The directions that the plot/Frankie's life take, often didn't make sense and I didn't like them most of the time. Many incidents and twists were unbelievable and superficial and silly, while the author seems to take very lightly issues such as cheating or drug abuse etc.
There is supposed to be some mystery about Frankie's death (the end of the book left me disappointed), there are all kind of strange coincidences (or no coincidences) and a magic/supernatural element in the book that makes for a weird mix, while the narrator of the story is... Did I not mention that? Well, it's... Music.
I restrict my self from saying more.
Maybe my review seems harsh and my rating seems too high for this review. But I did like some parts of the book, while I think the elements I strongly disliked, are elements that personally I dislike in books in general, not having to do with the specific one. Also I always round my rating up in favor of the author. I think this is a book that a certain audience will love.
For me, it wasn't a bad book, but something felt off.
Different strokes for different folks I guess...
