~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" August,1983, it is the day of Nina Riva's annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone who is anyone wants to be around the famous Rivas: surfer and supermodel Nina, brothers Jay and Hud, and their adored baby sister Kit. Together, the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over - especially as the children of the legendary singer Mick Riva.
By midnight the party will be completely out of control.
By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames.
But before that first spark in the early hours of dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family will all come bubbling to the surface. "
At first I appreciated that it's not only about your usual love affairs of "flashy"/show-biz people, but I soon got tired of the whole melodrama about June and Mick and I got angry both with June and with Nina. I found their spineless characters too superficial, while Jay and Hud were not that well-formed characters either, nor was Kit who felt kind of more real and she was the only one with some kind of spark. I really found the thread about Casey too poignant and forced and farfetched while most of the time nothing made sense. I found many scenes about secondary characters, the element of the police etc unnecessary. I liked the way the author pictured Malibu and it was an easy read to pass the time but the book dragged too much on some parts and I got bored.
There was some built-up towards the final scenes, but the ending kind of fizzled out. Too sugary and artificial.
Not the worst book I've read, but not very good either. I see this is a very popular author, so maybe it's just me...
