This book starts its journey with BookCrossing from Delphi, Greece
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
" Miri thinks she has got her wife back, when Leah finally returns after a deep sea mission that ended in catastrophe. It soon becomes clear, though, that Leah may have come back wrong. Whatever happened in that vessel, whatever it was they were supposed to be studying before they were stranded on the ocean floor, Leah has carried part of it with her, onto dry land and into their home.
To have the woman she loves back should mean a return to normal life, but Miri can feel Leah slipping from her grasp. Memories of what they had before – the jokes they shared, the films they watched, all the small things that made Leah hers – only remind Miri of what she stands to lose. Living in the same space but suddenly separate, Miri comes to realize that the life that they had might be gone. "
Well... How can I comment on this book without writing spoilers? It was a slow read, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But at first I thought the author was paving the way for more action and plot twists to come. This never happened.
The book retained its moody, weird narrative till the very end. The contemplations of Miri about the past and present of her relationship with Leah started to get on my nerves after a while, mainly because I'm not much into romance and stuff. The action - if you can call it action- at the present of the novel got repetitive and boring. The narration of Leah was more interesting, because it often focused on various factoids or more outward aspects of her life etc and less on navel gazing and such stuff. And mainly because I was intrigued to see what happened down in the abyss of the ocean.
But most of the time not much happened and the end of the book was a huge disappointment to me, because nothing got really explained and I felt that the author didn't really make an effort to knit any threads or to weave them into a cohesive, tight structure.
I was interested on this book at first, but by the end of it I was left with mixed feelings and felt kind of cheated.
Our Wives Under the Sea gets controversial feedback, so I am really curious to see what future readers will make of this.
