I can't really remember when or where I have previously read this story, but it felt familiar.
It is easily read in a couple of hours and I especially enjoyed it at the beginning. The narrative takes several turns that I did not expect. At first it looks more like a folk myth or fairy tale where the protagonist devises something and proves to the king/tsar his cunning and worth. At the same time it had a very comic and satirical style and I really liked it. But then the main character changes and the text takes on a more didactic form, towards the end the atmosphere becomes depressing and the satire becomes mainly political, while the epilogue of the story is sad and rather dull.
A good read to pass the time, but not a masterpiece.
