I've picked this book at the English Book Swap meeting in Neumarkt Altstetten.

Connell and Marianne grow up in the same small town in rural Ireland. The similarities end there; they are from very different worlds. When they both earn places at Trinity College in Dublin, a connection that has grown between them lasts long into the following years.

This is an exquisite love story about how a person can change another person's life - a simple yet profound realisation that unfolds beautifully over the course of the novel. It tells us how difficult it is to talk about how we feel and it tells us - blazingly - about cycles of domination, legitimacy and privilege. Alternating menace with overwhelming tenderness, Sally Rooney's second novel breathes fiction with new life.

UPDATE: We picked this book for a bookclub in Thalwil. We all agreed that the book is rather bland, we expected much more from such a hyped book. Perhaps, a second book could clarify why certain characters behaved the way they did. I really wanted to know why Marianne's mother and brother are so abusive and unhappy. Alas, we didn't get the explanation!

I didn't know what to expect from this book because the opinions on it were either love or hate and lately I mostly heard hate. But I clicked with it instantly like Connell clicked with Marianne. Even the infamous lack of proper punctuation and the use of present tense did not turn me off - it kind of suited this quirky book.

I loved the writing, it was so vivid and full of emotion. It gave me nostalgia, reminded me of my own time at school, starting a university, being an exchange student in Sweden.
