The Hobbit

This was a wonderful introduction to Tolkien. I loved the rich descriptions, the humorous style, and the elaborate plot. This book presents the different races that inhabit Middle Heart and the motives for each friendly or harsh relationship between them (hobbits and dwarves; goblins and dwarves; hobbits and elves; eagles and wolves, men and elves; etc.).
It is also the story of the unusual adventures of Mr. Bilbo Baggins, who decides to follow a band of dwarves and their leader, Gandalf. Despite his usually homebody and unadventurous nature, he agrees to join them and help them retrieve their gold, stolen by the powerful and evil Smaug, a greedy dragon.
I am looking forward to reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy now.
