A very good friend recommended this book to me. Knowing very little about the formation of Israel, I thought it would be interesting to read. This book takes place after WWII. It addresses what happened to the thousands of displaced Jews left in concentration camps at the end of the war. It follows the fictional paths of several different characters on their journey to Israel. This book dramatically discusses the hardships and years of brutal labor that these refugees willingly went through to create their "paradise." I am not Jewish, but I greatly enjoyed this novel. I thought the characters were gripping, and I wanted to constantly learn more about them. In these troubled times in the Middle East, this book seems all the more appropriate. Though I do feel that this novel is very one sided, I found it nevertheless an important glimpse into a history that is frequently overlooked. If you enjoy this book, try Trinity, by Leon Uris, which talks about the struggle of the Irish people under British oppression before Northern Ireland breaks away.
