After a truffle-hunting dog unearths a human hand instead of a precious fungus, Chief Inspector Wexford and his team proceed to interrogate everyone who lives nearby to see if they can turn up a match for the errant appendage among the eighty-five people who have disappeared over the past decade in this part of England. Then, when a second body is discovered nearby, Wexford experiences a feeling that's become a rarity for the veteran policeman: surprise. As Wexford painstakingly moves to resolve these multiple mysteries, long-buried secrets are brought to daylight, and Ruth Rendell once again proves why she has been hailed as our greatest living mystery writer.

Thank you very much for the book and also for the postcard of the Athens Convention in 2016, it will be a nice addition to my postcard collection! :)
An enjoyable book.

Thank you for the book and the huge selection of tea. I like this author and I think I will enjoy the book.
This is not an intense page turner that keeps the reader on edge. Sometimes, that is a good thing. I was in the mood for a lighter read and this hit the spot. The detective work is still interesting and I like that the author adds in the bit concerning female genital mutilation.
Congratulations on winning the book, chocolate and tea sweeps. This is going on a slow boat. I hope it won't take too long. Enjoy!
The slow boat docked in England today and a wonderful parcel was delivered to me with above book, some organic tea bags and chocolate ! Thank you very much for your generosity!
Dient realise this was the 21st Wexford novel so probably not a good one to start with, knowing nothing about the main characterx' past ( I generally like to read them in the right order) I did like the slightly dark sense of humour that Wexford displays but as far as the "crime story" element goes, the story didn't quite grab me. It wasn't a bad story but perhaps not quite as engaging as I would have liked it to be.

Going off as a bonus book to TheHappyHippy who runs a LFL in Bonnie Scotland
Received from @Kinedi via the Bookcrossing forum. So happy to receive this book-it has travelled much further than I ever have!
I've never read Ruth Rendell and I don't think she is an author I'll read again. I found the story quite slow, the characters overly simplistic and the writing style hasn't aged well with lots of implicit racism, sexism and general disgruntlement at the censure of 'political correctness'. But that's only my opinion. I know Rendell is a hugely successful author so proves the addage that you can't please all people.

Posted on to Daffodil-2 along with another book as part of a RABCK.
Received in the post as a bonus book from TheHappyHippy today along with My Name is Why. Thanks very much. This book will eventually find its way to the Cameo Cafe bookshelf but both my husband and myself will probably read it first. (The Cameo bookshelf needs a major sort-out by me as we've been closed for over two years due to the Pandemic).
Currently reading and quite enjoying this book. I've grown used to Inspector Wexford and team over the years but think one or two characters in this story are a bit "larger than life". Two of the pages of the book fell out as I was reading it but my husband has kindly mended it with Selotape so it's whole again. The book has travelled from Greece, to France and Canada before ending up in the UK so I wanted it to travel on a little further if possible. Review to follow .
REVIEW:-"I read a fair bit of this book before skimming it to the end. At first I got interested in the characters but soon became disenchanted with the "two Mrs. Tredowns" and all the talk of mythical creatures. I found the plot to be much too complicated and thought it unnecessary for the author to use the sexual content and innuendo that I can't remember her using in her earlier books. All in all a bit of a disappointment".

Also charity shops may well discard books that have been labelled in any way and they mostly chose only the books in the very best condition
to place on their shelves and discard the rest-so another bad release option.
