Graphic narrative of a harrowing stay at the Wilkinson Home for Boys.
Relayed to Macdonv in Ontario, Canada
Received today in the mail from FamFatale. Look forward to reading it.
Wow. It took me a while to get around to reading this, but I'm very glad I did. I haven't seen the movie yet, but now that I've read the book, I'm going to.
What do I say about this book? Once the boys were sent to Wilkinson Home for Boys, it was an exhausting read. What happened to them is so emotionally harrowing just to read - I can't even imagine what it must have been like, as a 13-year-old, to live through.
And, call me callous, but I think Nokes got exactly what he deserved. It sounds like the ultimate in "what goes around comes around." It is astounding to me that in the 20th century, this kind of horrifying abuse could take place.
At least Mr Carcaterra has seemed to, if not get over it, get past what he was subjected to, and become successful. And reading the way Michael was when growing up, I fully expected him to be one of the group whose life was cut short. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he also wasn't broken by what he experienced, and I hope he's happy, wherever he is.
Definitely worth reading.
