An excellent book by Canadian auther Douglas Coupland. One of his earlier works.
About 3 twenty-somethings that have quit their jobs to find changes that will add meaning to their lives. A facinating account of North American pop culture.
I read it in about 2 days.

got a MyStERy sWaP the other day...hoping I'm hip enough to enjoy this one-thanks UKbrat!
Oh no-I could not get into this one at all- AT ALL! I guess I am further from the norm or too growed upped or something-but this was just so American or urban or selfabsorbed-geez-no way- I thought I'd like it...I TRIED to read it and could not-I'm sure Douglas Coupland would have a good definition to explain who I am and why fairly recent pop literature is disliked by me-but I don't think I could get through reading that either. sorry ukbrat for getting you to swap it with me-it was not worth the postage IMHO

Released on Friday, July 16, 2004 at sent to another bookcrosser in Peterborough, Ontario Canada.
Sent this one this morning after finding a post office unaffected by the flood(we're still in a "state of emmergency")...I'm sending it to an unsatisfied bookcrosser who took me up on a 'mYsTeRY sWAP' and they did not like what I sent them(okay okay it was a colouring book)
This selection was picked because I disliked it so much and since I like the first attempt I had at swaPpIng them and they were left so unsatisfied that it (may?)stand to reason they may like what I dislike...(maybe I got water on the brain but it makes sense to me)

Thanks Funsour. I'll give this a "go" and see what I think. Seems like it is pretty different from much of what I've read. (It's a little suspicious that their pull quote is "a groundbreaking novel."
And, for the record, it's not that I disliked the coloring book so much as I was just confused by it. (Plus, before it arrived, you sent a PM saying that you had sent the wrong book by mistake). No worries though, and I appreciate that you were more than willing to send me something with words AND pictures.

Well, this book is still a part of Mount TBR, but it did come in handy last night...in fact, I won Trivial Pursuit (the newest edition) by knowing what Douglas Coupland novel did...something something something (I forget the exact question) but still, woohoo!!
Well, I've given up on this book. I've started it twice in the last 9 months but only gotten two or three chapters into it before becoming distracted. I guess I just don't care enough. And so I'm going to send it off as a wish fulfillment to someone who hopefully will actually read it and love it.
A wish fulfilled. Thank you so much mitziyah for going to the trouble to send this all the way over here!!
Hopefully I''ll be the one that loves this. I really enjoyed the Douglas Coupland book I read previously, Girlfriend in a Coma, so I hope this is more of the same.
TBR.

I ultimately enjoyed this but I didn't think it was anything outstanding. The three protaganists are so self indulgent they are tiresome at times and I did find my attention wandering on occasion. I would have enjoyed this more had I read it 10 years ago I think.
Thanks again mitziyah and everyone else that passed this along. I'll be taking it to our Sydney meetup tomorrow night to see if there's anyone else that's interested in reading it.

Picked up at the Sydney Meetup. Looks like an unusual book.
Very strange, almost unsettling at times! It's a weird story about three young people who head to the desert in order to opt out of 'normal society'. I wasn't impressed with the book at first, but the more I read, the more I enjoyed it, despite (because of?) the characters who seemed to try desperately hard not to be average. I could almost feel the relief of the author (photo on fly leaf) after each writing session during which he no doubt vented pressure on his brain by releasing some of the hundreds of quirky similes that desperately jostled for immortalisation in print. Phew ... yeah, it's unusual.
Thank you all for releasing it. It will continue its journey next week.
