I enjoyed this first book in the series, although I think I did enjoy The Palace (2nd in the series) a bit more. This book was shorter, but didn't have as much of a historical background as part of the story - took place in Paris during the reign of Louis XV. This story had more horror elements to it than The Palace, but it wasn't too graphic.

Received this in yesterday's mail. I'm in the middle of another book, but I will get to this as soon as possible. Looking forward to reading this one. I'll journal more when I have finished it.

Enjoyed this book very much. I really enjoyed the rich descriptions of the people, dress, society, entertainment and morays of France in the 1700’s.

I enjoyed the letters sprinkled throughout the book. At first they were distracting and difficult. But, I realized how they added to period favor of the book, and then I really enjoyed them. Things moved slower in that time and people wrote letters. You gained enormous amount of character information, cultural information and moral information from each letter.

The book was light on the Vampire story side. But, I did expect that since I had read his second book. I wish I had read this one first – but, that’s just me – I love to read series in order. I checked my library and I found references to 15 books in this series – with the characters of St. Germain and/or Madeline. Also, they move all over the world in the series. I just could not figure out which is the 3rd book in the series. I will be looking for the next book. Anybody know of a bookring for the 3rd book?

I just can't do it. I'm sorry for giving up, but I just can't bear all of the flouncy court life in a vampire novel, especially since I have so little time to read-- every minute is precious and cannot be squandered by a book that I don't care for. I'll pass this on to Zarylia who, I hope, can appreciate it more than I could.

St. Paul/MN/USA - I can't say that I am in love with the book, but it was a decent read and kind of a fun fluff book. It was a bit gruesome at times and rather dark, but not too terribly challenging. One of my pet peeves about the book is so foolish, but it kept coming up and just aggravated me. It was the fact that Yarbro was always mentioning Saint Germain's short stature. Now, logically this makes sense because people keep getting taller, but it simply did not fit with the tall and dashing picture I had of him in my head. Anyway, thanks for the opportunity to read this book. I will be passing it on to Suebo as soon as I get an address.
