I got this softcover at Barnes and Noble today, attracted by the stark cover-art - and the blurbs comparing it to the work of Shirley Jackson, which is a lot to live up to!

Turns out it doesn't compare to Jackson that closely, at least not for me, and I found it to be very, very slow in advancing the story. It's also uncomfortable - a family with lots of secrets and dysfunction, being nostalgic for a place that is always described as extremely uncomfortable and inconvenient at best, and nightmarish at worst. There were some nice notes re the brother protecting his disabled younger sibling, though that got strange when the sect appeared to have cured the boy...

I plan to leave this book, bagged against the elements, on a bench or gate at the cemetery; hope the finder enjoys it!
