Stephen Baxter was one of the stars of "radical new hard science fiction" in the 1980s and this is a perfect example. Both setting and story lead from investigation of an extreme idea of the possibilities of physics and human science.
Flux is part of Baxter's original Xeelee cycle and some of the context won't quite come clear without reading the next book, Ring. Even so, it tells a clever story told well.
