This is the coming-of-age story of a young man who enlisted in the Marine Corps straight out of high school and served in the first Gulf War. Its roughness and casual descriptions of brutality won't surprise anyone familiar with the classics of the genre (Manchester's "Goodbye Darkness," Sledge's "With the Old Breed," or Caputo's "A Rumor of War") but its "literary" tone (Swofford went on to college and a career as a writer) may be a little jarring. There's more self-analysis than war story here, but I found it gripping.
My recommendation: Give it 10 pages or so. If the language hasn't put you off by then, give it another 50 pages or so. If the approach hasn't put you off by then, finish it.
