One of my favourite GGK books, found at a charity shop during the trip to Kiruna and the Ice Hotel in the north of Sweden.
The book will be RABCKd to a nice bookcrosser who likes SF/fantasy.

Wow - this arrived in the mail today, a complete and utter surprise! Thank you so much, pikapolonica! I had only read one book by Kay (not this one), years ago, and had been meaning to read more, as people kept raving about him. Definitely an inspired RABCK. ;)
On a side note, I was taken with the fact that you found this on a trip to the ice-hotel, as my daughter and I saw this on a t.v. show, and she's been pushing for a trip ever since! It looks amazing, but I wonder what my hot water bottle would do to the bed?
AND thank you for the compliment as well as the book! :)

Finally finished this last night - not slow because I wasn't enjoying it, but slow because I could only read it in twenty minute or so installments, and it is not a book which lends itself to that! Very involved and detailed political set-up, I guess you'd call it (almost said 'historical', but of course it isn't really - quite!), large cast of characters, and I kept forgetting which country and religion the secondary ones belonged to!
Anyway, really enjoyed it - cried and cried at the ending, though I knew it was coming from pretty early on (the one I liked better, so I knew he was doomed!). The last twisty surprise didn't do too much for me - thought it was more clever than really adding anything to the story, but that's a small quibble.
Many thanks again, pikapolonica! Now I'll just have to think of someone to send it on to - unless you have any suggestions?
