Alice Bullock is a young newlywed whose husband is off fighting with the Union army. She is left on his family farm with a mother-in-law who does not like her. Her only pleasure is quilting. Her story is written in letters to her sister. I had problems with this form of writing in the first few pages but then caught on and couldn't put it down. A wonderful descriptive tale with love, murder, and forgiveness.
