This is the story of the wives of Los Alamos, 1943 - 1945. How was it for the wives of the scientists, living in the military secrecy surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb, how was it for the women who for the most part had very little idea what their husbands were working on.
They didn't know where they were going until they got there; the housing was hastily thrown up, there were no bathtubs and often no water, there was a fence around their community, their mail was censored, they had to get permission to leave. In the midst of this wartime secrecy and security, the women were birthing and raising children, arranging social groups, cooking meals, being wives. This went on for three years and then the bombs were used, the war ended. What happened then? How did they feel about it, how did they cope with it, who did their children grow up to be?
It was written in first person plural but that didn't bother me. I found the history very interesting and am glad that I had a chance to read this book.
