Idoru

Found this for $1 in a local dollar shop, and figured it was worth the money. Turned out that indeed it was. Gibson's writing is a bit dry and offputting at first, but once he gets going on a story you hardly notice it anymore.
I would say that Idoru isn't Gibon's best work, but it's still pretty good. The book tells follows two stories that begin separately and then converge toward the end. The first story involves a researcher with a knack for finding patterns in seemingly random data: on the outs with his former employer (a reality-TV show), he is hired by the security for a pop star who wants to find out why that star plans to marry a virtual idol singer—a computer program who isn't even "real". Meanwhile, a young girl from an American chapter of that pop star's fan club travels to Japan to find out if the rumor is true, and gets caught up in criminal circumstances beyond her control.
I found it to be an enjoyable story, and would recommend it to others.

This poorly written book of counter-culture haikus should NEVER be read by ANYONE. I picked this up on a whim at a used bookstore while traveling ($20 American! What a rip!) This particular copy won't ever be read again, as I was trapped underground during a typhoon and ate 20-25 pages a day for survival. (Worst 48 hours of my life!) I skipped page 48, however, as an unidentifiable stain made it very unappealing. So, in short, don't read this book. Oh, and stay out of Burma during typhoon season.
