another one I waited for & in which I was somewhat disappointed. I thought it took a little long to get into, then the pace picked up, then the end was a little too quick. Don't get me wrong! I am not dissing this book, nor was I mentally comparing Jeremy Carrier to Alex Delaware when I read this one. I simply don't think that Kellerman was at his best here. The premise of the novel was good; I liked the idea behind the Conspiracy Club itself, but I don't feel it was as in depth as it could have been.
synopsis.
Jeremy Carrier is a shrink in a hospital, going through some turmoil still after the murder of his girlfriend, a nurse at the hospital (Jocelyn). He is approached by one Dr. Arthur Chess, a doctor who though old still manages to serve on different committees at the hospital. He talks to Jeremy somewhat enigmatically, then invites him to a dinner in an old Victorian home, where he is served the best food and wine, while all the while Jeremy tries to understand the nature of the conversation all around him among the small group of guests. Just who these people are and what purpose their meetings serve goes to the main part of the story, so I will not disclose it here. Jeremy begins to be sent strange mail, not addressed to him, but which finds its way onto his desk. Then, not long after that meeting, Dr. Chess goes abroad and sends Jeremy a bizarre series of postcards. It isn't until one of these weird pieces of mail reaches Jeremy that he realizes what his role in all of this secrecy is supposed to be. Meantime, for the love interest, Jeremy is taken with a resident intern, Angela Rios, who also may play a role in all of Jeremy's activities.
I hope he continues the Conspiracy club as a series...it would be a very cool idea. Once you've read the book, you'll know what I mean. So it's not that I think the idea is a bad one, and I do like Jeremy's character (once you get past his melancholia), but the beat of the story is all wrong.
Anyway, it's available.
