Taking place in Alaska, in the dead if winter.... there is probably not a more unhospitable place on earth... but one man find the beauty of the wildlife there so wonderful that he leaves his wife and child to photograph it.
He gets in to serious danger and his family, out of love for him,try to find him. Amazingly they do, an amazing journey. Many obstacles have to be overcome and fears faced. They do and discover also the frightful results of fracking, what can and does happen, and this puts them all into greater danger from those who profit for fracking for oil. Alone with them on the Alaskan plain.
The silence of Alaska is not the only silence, its also the frackers who are trying to silence those who lift the lid and show the devastation. And then, most poignantly, this book opens a little door into the silent world of deafness, as the child is deaf and works so hard at being heard and understood. So clever brave girl, she is fiction but I'd love to meet her! She plays a vital role in this book of human love.

When ten-year-old Ruby, profoundly deaf, travels to Alaska, she and her mother expect her father to be there to meet them. When they hear that there's been a disaster in the Inupiat village he was staying in, they refuse to believe that he's dead and so begins a terrifying journey through the cold to look for him. Someone is following them, they don't know who they can trust, and there biggest danger of all is from the environment of the extreme north. This is a fantastic and page-turning thriller but also includes the human elements of Ruby's disability and Matt and Yasmin's relationship. I love the way Ruby's deafness is used as a metaphor for the bleak emptiness of the Alaskan wilderness, and the descriptions of the fragile environment being destroyed by the greed of men. Couldn't put this down.

A pleasant surprise in my mailbox. I traveled to Alaska in January of 2019, it was a fantastic trip, what beautiful scenery. I will put this on the top of my TBR pile. I want to read this while the scenes are still fresh in my memory.

Loved this book...a new author for me. I’ve been north of Fairbanks in January and briefly experienced -44 deg F. This book was so well written describing the sensations of extreme cold very well. I loved Ruby and her spirit and Yasmin, her mom.
