The year is 2023, and information is everywhere: free flowing, abundant, instantaneous. but is all -- or any of it accurate? Criminal profiler and psychiatrist Dr. Gideon Wolfe is investigating the murder of a friend in New York City when suddenly he is caught up in the company of a beautiful woman, her ingenious brother, and a band of techno-terrorists at war with the world itself. While the earth sags under the weight of violence, poverty, and disease, one man has discovered the only way to save humankind from itself. And with a little help from Gideon Wolfe, all it will take are a few little lies -- and one astounding piece of truth... (cover blurb)

I liked this book, even though I didn't quite believe someone as apparently intelligent and conscientious as Dr. Wolfe would fall in so easily with the aforementioned "techno-terrorists," only to fall out with them just as easily. And the romance between Wolfe and Larissa didn't ring true at all.
Caveats aside, this is an entertaining novel with an intriguing premise. How do we know what we know? What if we've been told lies? Carr's novel takes one of modern society's most paranoid fantasies -- that the media are manipulated for the purpose of pacification of the masses -- and runs away with it. Our "heroes" zip about the world in a fabulously advanced aircraft, fighting this manipulation by planting lies of their own in the hope some media outlet will see through them, but all they get for their efforts is the full might of the military aimed directly at them. How it all works out is worth the time spent reading.
Well-rounded and sympathetic characters. Good story. Yeah, go read it.

Got it today. Looks interesting; I look forward to reading this one. Thank you avanta7!
I found the premise, a world gone mad with greed, willful ignorance and the proliferation of information as a replacement for learning, depressing since it echoes so much of my own fears about the world today. I couldn't suspend these feelings long enough to actually enjoy the book, especially since I kept thinking how our future doesn't have the convenient sci-fi out.
