One word summary: Bleak.
A very deep and important book. Any easier read than I expected. I read it all in four (albeit unemployed and relatively empty) days. If I had read this when I was younger, I certainly hadn't been ready for it then, and didn't retain much except what "everybody" knows about it.
PS: I don't recommend you try this out when you are depressed or if you are prone to depression.
I'm glad I read it, watched the John Hurt movie, and spent some time on the internet exploring symbols and motifs, but I won't read it again. Giving to someone who requested to read it next.
