This is a really graphic account of a particularly vicious rape against the author when she was only 18 years old and still a virgin. Her description from beginning to end of her ordeal is brutal and not for the squeamish! She also describes the pain of giving her statement to police, examination by a doctor and when the rapist is finally caught she has the added anguish of identification in a line-up and giving evidence in court. It is horrific. Just hope and pray it never happens to you.

This is now part of a bookray as follows:

Journal Entry 4 by KathyS from Ramsey, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 5, 2004
A powerful story which is painful to read. Sebold's inherent strength of personality shines through. I can only hope that I would have her courage in a similiar situation - and pray that nothing like this happens to anyone I know.

Thank you for sharing this with me MoJeDenUK. I will pass it on to Gooner as soon as possible.

Released on Friday, May 07, 2004 at Postal Release in Royal Mail, England United Kingdom.

On it's way to Gooner 2nd Class Mail today - along with a little surprise book :o)

Journal Entry 7 by Gooner from March, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 19, 2004
Well, I just about finished this. Perhaps I would have been more interested if I'd read it before "The Lovely Bones".

Anguish, fear, terror - they're all present in this memoir.

Thanks to MoJoDenUK for sending it out as a ring.

Updated 22 May 04: I handed this over to rachels-ratty at the Nottingham Meet-up

Wow. Very glad I put my name on this bookring, shall be hunting down my own PC copy now as it's one I would like to read again.

The discription of the author's rape is there in graphic detail. As has already been mentioned, it's not for the fainthearted; Ms Sebold certainly leaves us, the readers in no doubt exactly what happened to her age 18. She goes on to write ALL about the aftermath, how the rights of the victim always seem to be superceded by those of the suspect. One poingnant moment was when she came face to face with her attacker. No one had thought she needed to know he was free to come and go as he pleased...

Shall be moving onwards a.s.a.p

Received this on Thursday, but this is my first chance to journal. Have started it and think it is very good so far.

Journal Entry 11 by bookfrogster from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Saturday, June 19, 2004
I think what makes this book so good is Alice Sebold's clear writing and statements about what happened. Matter-of-factness definitely has more impact than over-use of adjectives. Her exploration of the way being raped affected all aspects of her life, even in ways she wasn't at first aware of, is so interesting. It must have been a very painful book to write.
On its way to Jords as soon as I have her address.

Released on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 at West Maitland Street Post Office in Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom.

Set free on its way to Jords. Happy reading!

Can't wait to get my teeth into this one. Will journal when read.

Journal Entry 14 by Jords from Preston, Lancashire United Kingdom on Saturday, July 24, 2004
This certainly not a book for the faint hearted. The accounts of the rape and her life afterwards are so graphic, that I often found myself wincing.... yet, it is still a gripping read. I don't know about anyone else, however I certainly felt like a voyeur reading it.

I think I prefered The Lovely Bones to this as even though it's a good read, knowing that it actually happened to the author in real life, made it just a bit too real and disturbing.

Thanks for letting me borrow it - off to skribble xx

I was walking past the door just as my (lovely) postie was pushing this through. I feel slightly aprehensive about it given the subject matter but also compelled to make a start as soon as possible.

I have been completely unable to put this book down all day, I have kept interrupting what I'm doing to sit down and read some more. I think the reason that it gripped me so much was because I needed to see Alice through to the end of the book.

Although it is frankly brutal in the way it is written, I didn't find it as hard to read as I was expecting. That said, it wasn't the graphic account of the author's rape that really got to me, it was the last 3 or so chapters.

I find I'm still pondering the author's attitudes to those around her in the immediate aftermath of the trauma. People who though they tried (and through no fault of their own) were incapable of responding to her in a way that was helpful.

Will pass on to Tabyorky asap.

I agree that the subject was better dealt with in Sebold's "matter of fact" way rather than with flowery adjectives. I couldn't help myself ultimately feeling sorry for the author due to the way that this terrible trauma appears to have understandably affected her life. A very brave woman.

I have previously read The Lovely Bones which I enjoyed enormously.

Off to rainbow3 - enjoy!

This just arrived on Monday and I drank it in like water, watched it unfurl like a movie with the sound turned down. Gripped, unable to move away, disturbed then distraught yet mostly protected all the while by the calm delineation of sparse detail. Disassociation in action. It’s quietly shattering and I feel the description “searing candour” on the book jacket wholly apt. I had thought after reading The Lovely Bones and finding the writing style so appropriate to such a harrowing topic if I was ever going to be able to read a book about rape this was the one. I was right. Somehow despite having swum straight though the book almost in one sitting I don’t feel I rushed it. It’s not an easy topic and as anticipated brought back memories of an assault I experienced many years ago. One of the reasons I was interested yet hesitant to tackle such a book. I am really glad I read it though. It helps me put my feelings on the topic into some sort of perspective and understand more.

In the aftermath section I there are two things that immediately resonate to me and relate to the subject of trauma & recovery, one was the haunting sentence, “Who would have thought something that happened that long ago could have so much power?” The other “I had post-traumatic stress disorder, but the only way I would believe it was to discover it on my own.”

So this book is at the end of the it’s ray, what now MoJeDenUK any thoughts?

After I received a request from Hellie posted this on approx, Sat 12 March 2005. However as of 8 April 2005 it had still not appeared at it’s destination.
