I honestly don't remember what inspired me to put this book on my wishlist. Did I see it on a friend's shelve? Did I stumble upon it on Goodreads or something? I enjoy fantasy and the premise seemed promising. In any case, I take full responsibility. After all, I knew what I was facing from chapter 1. Still, I read the whole thing, rolling my eyes half the time. I thought it would be a good choice for relaxing on the beach (see picture). Well.

This book is bad. So much so, that I can't even take it seriously. I am convinced that the author herself hasn't taken it seriously at all. I could write a long review based on enlightening quotes, but it feels pointless. If you'd like to read such a review or need solid proof about what I'm saying, take a look at this one, it captures my feelings perfectly: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/335972213?book_show_action=true&from_review_page=1

I'll just say this here: this is no real book and honestly it doesn't try to be. It's just some writer of mindless fanfiction having fun. Good for her, by all means. But there are some small sparks there somewhere, that could have turned it into something. Some vague idea about a world and a story. But clearly this wasn't the objective here. Why on earth place your story on a fantasy world in which you haven't given the slightest thought? Where all kinds of material, food and habbits of our own world are to be found in a vague medieval setting -none of which have anything to do with the "plot" or real reason for being mentioned (glass buildings, chocolate, opium, billiards, millions of books -yes, millions, in a single library-, a winter holiday to exchange candy and puppies, masked balls, but no gunpowder of course, and no magic -at this point). There are just there for the author and protagonist to have fun.

The characters are a joke, especially the protagonist. She is absolutely perfect, because we are told so every other sentense, and instead of a ruthless assasin behaves like a spoiled child who falls for the handsome prince. The writing is laughably bad, without the slightest sense of consistency, even from page to page. I thought Eragon was simple and derivative, but it looks like a masterpiece compared to this (though there is no recent fantasy or YA novel that I felt hasn't been used here, for some reason I mostly thought of Eragon -and wished I was reading that one instead... yes...)

It's beyond my understanding how this author's series became so successful and have sold in over 30 languages. Again, good for her. As for me... maybe I should be more careful what I wish for :-)
