One late spring evening in 1912, in the kitchens at Sterne, preparations begin of Emerald Torrington´s 20th birthday. But only a few miles away, a dreadful accident propels a crowd of mysterious and not altogether savory survivors to seek shelter at the ramshackle manor - and the household is thrown into a confusion and mischief. Evening turns to stormy night, and a most unpleasant parlor game threatens to blow respectability to smithereens.
Read this one a few years ago, nice little ghoststory.

This book will now travel to the lucky winner in the International RABCK Sweepstake, enjoy :)
Thank you soo much; this novel looks promising (you know me, ghost stories are my thing), and I love the beautiful postcard!:)
Reserved for the WishList Game; I would like to read it first (and about time I did...)
Currently reading it.
This is... how shall I put it?... a most unusual novel.
The beginning was not promising, quite slow and it took a long time to describe the characters... later on it was clear how important this was. I loved Emerald's resolution and practical sense, and out of the male characters, Ernest was my favourite.
The presentation of "the uninvited" in a cloud of mist was quite cinematic, and gave a clue to what was going on, at least for me.
However, I must confess that I found the whole episode with the horse quite annoying... the Great Undertaking, as Smudge called it.
I loved the detailed description of food, Ms Jones admits she took inspiration in an old cookbook by Ms Beeton... Wow, it must have been really hard to work in the kitchen at Edwardian times... I kept thinking about the washing up later on.
Overall, a quite enjoyable read, I even found myself reading at times in the day when I usually won't.
Thanks for sharing, Bjorg; I am currently waiting for Glade1's adddress in order to fulfill her Wish. :)
