I bought this after reading Tim Ferriss's "5 Bullet Friday" on 9th June 2017 where he wrote:

What I’m reading and enjoying — True Grit: A Novel. This novel has been made into several feature films, but the book beats them all. It was recommended to me by a professor who thought I would enjoy the perfect Stoic character: a tough-as-nails 14-year-old girl. First published in 1968, it tells the story of Mattie Ross, who pursues the man who robbed her father of his life, his horse, and $150 in cash money. She leaves home to avenge her father's blood with the one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Marshal, by her side. It’s a fast, fun, and surprisingly hilarious read. After too much serious non-fiction, this was exactly what I needed. I read it on two long car rides in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan (where I saw this).

Added to Mt. TBR.

I added this to my 2020 reading list and finished it in May over four short sittings.

It's all action from start to finish. The characters were well developed for such a short story. Mattie was great, she's stern, judgmental, and hilarious.

Given to KT-J to read before deciding where / who to send it to next.

I enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. I'm not really sure what I thought this would be like but I certainly didn't expect it to contain a character like Mattie Ross or the humour. For such a short book I was impressed that the pace and action didn't compromise the depth of the characters which is a testament to Portis' writing.

Overall, an enjoyable read and one I'd recommend to people.
