The story of the Elgin Marbles of the Parthenon--a great conflict more than a hundred years later!
Sending to 16stepper in AZ--Enjoy! :)
Arrived in today's mail! It looks fascinating. Thank you, seferim!
This has surfaced at the top of my TBR pile finally. I'm looking forward to this one!
Very interesting read. I had never heard of this story, so I'm grateful to seferim for recommending it to me. I'm not normally one that is interested in history, but this was very easy to read. I felt sorry for Elgin, losing his nose and never being reimbursed for his efforts (although he should have made arrangements in advance). I felt sorry for his wife, being married to a guy with no nose. Most of all, I feel sorry for all of us and the loss of such great art over the years due to man's aggressive expansionism, greed, and apathy. I don't know whether to be appalled at Elgin's cultural insensitivity or grateful for his willingness to be the goat in order to save art that might otherwise be destroyed.
Am handing this off to my dad, an artist, and asking that he pass it on to another artist when he has read it.

Dad returned this. He read it and said it was ok, but doesn't know an artist who would appreciate it. I'm hoping to join a local artists group. Maybe someone there would enjoy it? If not, available here!
Shared with a fellow Toastmaster who enjoyed the book immensely and said she had learned a great deal from it. Returned to me. Then I gave it to a friend who is English and very interested in English history. It may or may not come back to me.
