From the back cover:"Sunday, September 3rd, 1939. At the moment Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain broadcasts to the nation Britain's declaration of war with Germany, a senior Secret Service agent breaks into Maisie Dobbs' flat to await her return. Dr. Francesca Thomas has an urgent assignment for Maisie: to find the killer of a man who escaped occupied Belgium as a boy some twenty-three years earlier during the Great War. Within days, in a London shadowed by barrage balloons, bomb shelters, and the threat of invasion, another former Belgian refugee is found murdered. And as Maisie delves deeper into the killings of the dispossessed from the 'last war', a new kind of refugee - - an evacuee from London -- appears in Maisie's life."
Starting to read this book today.
Finished reading this book today. I really enjoyed this book, which has Maisie Dobbs back working as a psychologist and investigator at the start of World War II in 1939. She connects back with Dr. Francesca Thomas, who she trained with in the previous book when she was working undercover in Munich. Her current investigation has her looking into the death of a man who escaped from Belgium in WW I at the time when he was a teenager, so the reader learns of Belgium refugees at the time of the first World War, some of whom made the decision to continue living in England after the War ended. There are new developments in Maisie's personal life as well, which have me looking forward with anticipation to the next book in the series.
I'll be passing this book on to my sister, Maranlin, for her to read and enjoy.

It is 1939, and on the day that Britan declares war on Germany, Maisie is asked to investigate the murder of a Belgian refugee, who fled Belgium during WWI and opted to stay in England after the war was over. At the same time, children are being evacuated from London to the countryside. Maisie has some of these children billeted at her home in Kent. One of them is Anna, a young girl who doesn't speak, and no one knows where she came from, so Maisie is also searching for her family. This book was a real page turner, and I enjoyed it very much. I love how the author interweaves snippets here and there of the back story of Maisie's life to remind the reader of events from previous books. This also makes it easy for a reader who has not read the previous books in the series to understand a bit about Maisie's life.
I am returning this book to my sister, starrdust. Thank you so much for sharing!
