The Black Witch

A new Black Witch will rise…her powers vast beyond imagining.
A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining.
So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but while she is the absolute image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.
When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren is eager to join her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University and finally embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother's legacy. But she soon realizes that the university, which admits all manner of people—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of all Gardnerians—is an even more treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

Taken to the April meeting!
I picked this up for the April book meeting at Owl's nest and read the whole brick of a book on Sunday March 31 so I'd be ready for the meeting on April 1 - I did not expect it to be a 600+ page YA novel!! Still I flew through it and we had an excellent conversation about this controversial novel!
To the finder:
Calgary has an active group of BookCrossers that meet to swap books and discuss book crossing every second Saturday of the month at 11am at Cravings Market on Fairmount Drive SE. We always love to meet new crossers, so please join us any time you like!

Picked up at the monthly Book Crossing meeting at Cravings Market Restaurant
Oh my god. I love this book! Take my suggestion and find a day where you have nothing else to do before you start this book. I made the mistake of casually starting to read it thinking I could read a bit here and a bit there, THIS IS A MISTAKE! Once you start reading you cannot stop; something about the story, the characters, and the world building, just spirits you away.
If Megami-no-ushi doesn't bring the second one in quick enough I will gladly go hunting for the second one ;)

Will be bringing this book to the monthly Book Crossing meeting at Cravings Market Restaurant.
Caught at local meetup Aug 2019
Absolutely loved this book! Loved it so much I had to go get the sequel the next day.
Controlled release at local meetup.
Picked up this book at the Calgary BookCrossing September meet-up. Everyone keeps raving about this book, so I thought I would snatch it up.
I didn't love this book, at least, not as much as everyone else seemed to. The writing just wasn't strong enough to tackle such heavy topics and it sort of made the plot drag. Like, I don't care how hot a guy is; yes, he's good looking, but please move on. With that said, the book is enjoyable and it does make you stop and think about your own prejudices and viewpoints. I didn't realize this book was a big controversy when it first came out, but once you read it, you realize the author was trying to speak out against things like racism. I'm interested to see where this story is going now that all of the groundwork is out of the way.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing October meet-up.
Whoops, forgot to check this back in. No one wanted the book at the meeting so I'm holding it until the next meeting.
Passing on this book to the next reader at the Calgary BookCrossing November meet-up.
Picked up at get together
Enjoyed this book. It had a nice flow and I was interested in most of the characters.
Thanks for the read!
Thanks for the read!
Returned to another bookcrosser
Received this from my daughter as we checked out the books she had from people that afternoon.
I listened to this book and found the story a pretty good one. I did find it dragged a bit in places. I got a bit frustrated by her but will for sure read the sequel.
I am taking this to the November meetup. We changed it from Nov. 11 as we don't want to interfere with the time to remember AND Nov. 4 is the last day Cravings is open!! We have enjoyed our time there.
picked up at the November 2023 meeting
